Keeping It Green
Snow Plowing The Greens
Did you think you would ever see a snow plow on the greens? I know some of
you are interested in the "why and how" things are done on the greens so I
thought I would write a short article to keep you informed. This is the snow
coming off of the 3rd green. We removed the snow from all the greens to take
advantage of the warm temperatures we had this week. After the
snow was removed we were left with about 4 to 6 inches of ice. This ice has
been building all winter and if left long enough would suffocate the turf.
Once down to the ice we then spread sunflower seeds across the green. The sun
will heat the seeds up melting small holes down through the ice, causing the
top inch of ice to melt rapidly. The melted ice will then form pools of
water in the low spots on the green and we can come along and push this water
off the green. Once the ice is gone we push the seeds into piles and remove
them from the greens. I can hear the calls coming in now "We are going to have
sun flowers growing out of the greens". This is not true, the turf on the
greens is very dense and you would have to really work seeds that size to get
them down deep enough to germinate. In the rare occasion that one does
germinate, it can't survive being cut that low and will die shortly after
germination. Well that is the short version of "Snow Plowing the
Greens". I will keep you updated as we do things and explain the major greens
maintenance procedures that go into "keeping it green". If you
would like to see more pictures of the snow and ice coming off you can check
them out on Facebook.com and on our website.
